The mechanical behaviour of wood in longitudinal compression

Samples of Picea glauca 3 in long were compressed longitudinally at 9 or 18% moisture content for periods varying from 11/2 min to 10 days. When the total creep and total recovery strains were subdivided into their respective elastic and time-dependent components, it was observed that although the samples behaved in a linear visco-elastic manner at low stress values, the tendency at high stress values and increasing moisture content was towards non-linearity.
