A range of grassland management options for dairy farms with cows producing 5000 kg milk/year were evaluated economically using linear programming; options included zero grazing, growing or purchasing fodder maize, and having as large a herd as possible (maximum 170). Small farms needed high stocking rates and would have to purchase all winter feed even at f 0.6/kg SE, though purchasing land was more attractive in the long term.
