Winter and spring cultivation of aubergines under glass depends on cvs being produced which are adapted to low light intensity. Under such conditions the plants usually show excessive vegetative growth accompanied by flower shedding before or after anthesis. In short days fruit set was better in cvs from humid temperate regions (e.g. Japan) than in those from a dry climate (Mediterranean type) or from the tropics (e.g. S. Asia).
