The use of brown coal for growing vegetables under glass and for improving field soils

, : The use of brown coal for growing vegetables under glass and for improving field soils. Mededelingen van de Faculteit Landbouwwetenschappen, Rijksuniversiteit Gent 38(4): 1992-1999

The physical and chemical properties of Polish brown coal are described. When it is used as a substrate for growing plants, N, P, K and Cu must be added. In numerous container and greenhouse experiments in 1967-72 brown coal was compared with sphagnum peat as a substrate for lettuce, tomato and cucumber. Vegetable transplants raised on brown coal were satisfactory and had better root systems than those raised on sphagnum.
