Studies of the morphology and growth characters of P. sylvestris were made during 1961-1965 throughout Poland, except on montane and highland sites. For the purposes of the study the country was divided into two regions, viz. Baltic and Northern. Seed-producing stands were selected on site classes I or II, having 150-200 trees/ha, and on each study area 50 trees were examined for crown type and dimensions, thickness of first-order branches, angle of branching, and bark characters.
