Water uptake and hatching in the potato cyst nematode, Heterodera rostochiensis, and the root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita

Second-stage Heterodera rostochiensis were seen to move very little while confined to the egg, whereas unhatched larvae of Meloidogyne incognita were very active. Using interference microscopy, it was found that the water content of the Heterodera larva increased immediately it was liberated from the egg while that of the Meloidogyne larva remained constant. This suggests that the Heterodera larva is physically constricted by the egg shell which restricts its movement and water content.
