Winter wheat. Nitrogen increase and chlormequat use, late nitrogen fertilizer application

In field trials at several sites in 1968-70, 14 winter wheat were given (a) the normal N fertilizer application, including a late application of 40-50 kg/ha, (b) as (a) plus an extra 30 kg N/ha in the spring, or (c) as (b) + 1-1.5 l chlormequat/ha applied when plants were 10-15 cm tall. Lodging was increased by (b) in all 3 years, Berthold, Shernauer and Magnet showing the most lodging. Yields were decreased 2.9% in 1968 by (b), increased 1.7% in 1969 and were not affected in 1970.
