A comparison of seedlings and clonal cuttings of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.)

A comparison of seedlings and clonal cuttings of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.)

En sammenligning af froeplanter og stiklingeformerede kloner of roedgran Picea abies L Karst og sitkagran Picea sitchensis Bong Carr: 74

Selection of cuttings and seedlings from 8-9-year-old stands of P. abies and P. sitchensis for height, at selection intensities of 3.8 and 2.5 respectively, gave a positive result in height growth after six years. Variation within clones, considered to be due to the "clonal effect", was larger than in the seedlings in the case of P. abies but smaller in P. sitchensis. It was concluded that propagation by cuttings is a viable method of supplying improved plant material in these species.
