A pilot survey of domestic food wastage

Quantities of left-over food were weighed during 7 days for 25 households in south London. Estimated energy, protein and fat contents of the left-over food were compared with the calculated amounts in the food available at the meal. No attempt was made to differentiate between plate or cooking waste, or between types of food. Emphasis was on the measurement of intake, rather than waste collection. By analysis, left-over food had mean gross energy of 26 kJ/g DM., range none to 35 kJ/g.
