Biotin-supplementation of diets; the incidence of foot lesions, and the reproductive performance of sows

Lesions on the skin and feet in a herd of breeding pigs were similar to those seen in biotin deficiency. By calculation biotin in the diets of the sows during pregnancy and lactation was 159 and 152 mu g/kg. This was more than estimated values, from 99 to 128 mu g/kg in 2 trials. The diets were of barley, soya bean oilmeal and mineral and vitamin supplement in pregnancy and wheat and fish meal also in lactation. The vitamin supplement did not supply biotin.
