Body composition of young sheep. 3. Effect of intake and pasture species on body composition and ruminal development of Merino lambs

Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture and Animal Husbandry 14(70): 604-612

For part 2 see NAR 39, 8196.3. Australian Merino wethers 12 to 16 weeks of age, of 18.1 kg mean initial weight, were fed individually for 42 days on pelleted lucerne hay with 18.1% crude protein and 41.6% normal acid fibre or on pelleted fescue hay with 9.1 and 49.0%. Digestibility of DM was 60.3 and 63.5%. Each diet was given at maintenance or to permit daily gain of 40 or 180 g. Six lambs were killed at the start. The rest got 600 g feed 10 h before slaughter at the end.
