Of 366 tomato varieties grown under irrigation, only 16 had more than 6% dry matter in the fruits. One had a high ascorbic acid content (over 34 mg%), three a high acid content (over 0.6%) and two a high carotene content. Attempts to improve approved varieties with respect to the content of dry matter in the fruits by individual selection were unsuccessful.
