Causes of variation in the birth weight of piglets, and the blood and body composition of under-weight piglets

Causes of variation in the birth weight of piglets, and the blood and body composition of under-weight piglets

Deutsche Tieraerztliche Wochenschrift 83(10): 438-448

In studies in 1970-1974 with 2700 piglets from 207 litters, birth weight decreased by about 29 g/piglet with increase in litter size and increased by about 30 g/day when pregnancy duration was increased from 110 to 118 days. For a given litter size and pregnancy duration, piglets in the first and second litters were 7 and 3% lighter respectively than those in later litters. Sows which weighed <200 kg produced significantly smaller piglets than did heavier sows.
