Changes in grain weight and protein quality in maize after back crossing with high-lysine forms

Work has been going on at the Kazakh Institute of Agriculture since 1968 to produce high-lysine forms of promising lines using the mutants opaque-2 and floury-2. In the second year of back crossing, there was a reduction in the weight of opaque grains in high-protein forms which differed according to the normal form used in the back cross. Sources of the o2 gene had a more favourable effect on protein quality than those of fl2.
