The structure and working of the co-operative farm credit system in the USA are described. Due to increasing demand for credit in rural areas, the farmer-owned co-operative farm credit system was strengthened by an Act of Congress in 1971 to improve the income and well-being of the farmers. Initially capitalized and nurtured through Government action, the system is now completely owned by its borrowers.
