Abstract
125 Hereford heifers, aged 3 yr, were inseminated with semen from Charolais, Santa Gertrudis (SG), Holstein-Friesian (HF) or Hereford bulls. Of 28, 28, 22 and 24 calves of the 4 types, 4, 1, 3 and 4 resp. were stillborn or died within 24 h of birth; in the 4 groups, the number of difficult calvings was 4, 4, 4 and 1. Gestation length averaged 285.5, 282.6, 277.7 and 284.1 days resp. Birth weight of male calves averaged 30.80, 32.14, 32.30 and 27.17 kg, and that of females 29.64, 30.14, 29.20 and 29.25; body weight at weaning (205 days) averaged 174.41, 169.89, 170.45 and 155.70 kg for males , and 162.27, 173.62, 151.97 and 167.53 kg for females . At 540 days of age, body weight averaged 225.57, 237.60, 237.49 and 207.88 kg resp. for males , and 221.84, 235.89, 226.64 and 219.34 kg for females ; at slaughter (33 mth) it averaged 401.20, 418.15, 399.44 and 329.92 kg for males , and 400.43, 416.60, 399.00 and 326.17 kg for females . Dressing percentage averaged 50.70, 51.62 and 50.96 resp. for Charolais, SG, and HF crossbreds v 49.73 for Hereford purebreds. The percentage of lean averaged 62.55, 59.42 and 60.96 in the crossbreds v 58.0 in the Herefords, the percentage of fat 18.49, 22.24 and 18.49 v 22.61, and the percentage of bone 18.95, 18.32 and 20.54 v 19.37.
