Concentrations of free amino acids in brains of mice during the induction of physical dependence on ethanol and during the ethanol withdrawal syndrome

For 10 days 150 adult male mice weighing 18 to 22 g inhaled air with ethanol from 10 mg/litre on day 1 to 20 mg/litre on day 10 to induce ethanol dependence. During the induction of dependence there was an initial rise in the brain of glycine, a sustained increase in tyrosine and falls in gamma -aminobutyric acid and proline. Serine and isoleucine concentrations fell consistently during induction of dependence but the change was not significant.
