Conifer damage and death associated with the use of highway deicing salt in the Lake Tahoe Basin of California and Nevada

Conifer damage and death associated with the use of highway deicing salt in the Lake Tahoe Basin of California and Nevada

Forest Pest Control Technical Report, USDA Forest Service, California Region 1: 16

Describes a study begun in 1973 to determine the extent and severity of salt damage to conifers (predominantly Pinus jeffreyi, Abies concolor and Libocedrus decurrens) growing within 200 ft of roads in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Results showed that ca. 3000 trees, in more than 300 locations, were dead or showed symptoms of salt damage. Foliar Na and Cl contents were greater in trees near the road than in trees at greater distances, and the amounts were correlated with symptoms of damage.
