Control of chironomid larvae (Chironomidae; Diptera) in shallow earthen ponds by planarian, Dugesia dorotocephala (Woodworth)

Control of chironomid larvae (Chironomidae; Diptera) in shallow earthen ponds by planarian, Dugesia dorotocephala (Woodworth)

Korean Journal of Entomology 6(2): 45-50

Laboratory and field tests on the effectiveness of the planarian Dugesia dorotocephala as a predator of chironomid larvae were carried out in 1974 in California. In the field, mature planarians introduced at the rate of 300/pool into shallow earthen pools 9.1 by 11 m at Whittier Narrows in May gave 50.6 and 51.9% control of the larvae of Chironomus, Cricotopus, Procladius and Tanypus spp. after 1 and 2 months, respectively.
