Control of snail hosts of bilharziasis in Egypt. 1. Effect of triphenyltin hydroxide (Du-Ter) on aerobic oxidation of the snails Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus trucatus

Triphenyltin hydroxide (TPT) inhibited the oxidation of pyruvate and glutamate + malate, by Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus in all concentrations tested, but had a biphasic effect on oxidation of succinate and of tetramethyl p-phenylene diamine (TMPP) + abscorbate. The inhibition was more pronounced in B. truncatus, and the inhibitory effect of TPT varied between substrates. Pyruvate and, to a lesser extent, glutamate + malate oxidations were much more highly inhibited than succinate oxidation and that of TMPD + ascorbate was least affected. The LC50 of TMT inhibited pyruvate and glutamate + malate oxidation by 50% but had no significant effect on oxidation of the other compounds. The mode of action of TPT is discussed.
