Oestrus was induced in 611 gilts and 762 sows, and insemination took place twice in 1 day on display of the standing reflex in the presence of a boar. For 315 experimental gilts and 377 sows, 5 IU oxytocin were added to the semen before each insemination. In experimental gilts, the duration of insemination averaged 5.8 min v 5.9 in control gilts (no oxytocin in semen), and in experimental sows it averaged 5.1 min v 5.1 in controls.
