Various methods of lengthening the growing season, thereby allowing the introduction of additional crops are described: the use of shorter duration varieties; the use of techniques which allow earlier planting at the beginning of the rainy season; harvesting at maturity; overlapping growing periods by relay and inter-cropping; use of crops tolerant to drought; use of techniques for efficient soil moisture utilization; use of supplementary irrigation.
