Cytophotometric study of nuclear DNA and histones in Euglena gracilis and Astasia longa

Cytophotometric study of nuclear DNA and histones in Euglena gracilis and Astasia longa

Karyologiya i genetika prosteishikh Seriya "Protozoologiya", vyp 1: 151-158

DNA and histones were studied by Feulgen or heparin-alcian blue staining and cytophotometry in 7 clones of Euglena gracilis and 6 clones of Astasia longa, isolated from natural populations. The clones differed from each other in both DNA and histone content/cell nucleus, and Astasia nuclei contained smaller amounts of both than did Euglena nuclei. Prolonged cultivation of Euglena clones in darkness or insufficient illumination caused a reduction in DNA and histones.
