Detrimental effects of feeding Pleistophora schubergi (Microsporida) to spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) naturally infected with Nosema fumiferanae

Spores of the microsporidian Pleistophora schubergi were fed to larvae of Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) that were naturally infected with Nosema fumiferanae. Larval mortality increased, and female pupal weight, adult life-span, and fecundity were significantly reduced. High spore concentrations (5 X 108 spores/cup of artificial diet) and treatment during the second instar caused the most detrimental effects.
