Development of permanent grassland swards as influenced by many years of high rates of nitrogen application

Development of permanent grassland swards as influenced by many years of high rates of nitrogen application

Archiv fur Acker und Pflanzenbau und Bodenkunde 19(12): 867-877

In long-term trials on valley sand and lowland moor soils, permanent grassland was given annual applications of 0-720 kg N and 0-480 kg N/ha, respectively, in combination with P and K at fixed or variable rates. High N rates resulted in rapid and continuous increases in the proportion of Agropyron repens in the sward, whereas medium and low N rates resulted in small increases in the first 5-7 years and gradual decrease in the next 10 years.
