Duration of load tests for wood in tension perpendicular to grain

Duration of load tests for wood in tension perpendicular to grain

Forest Products Journal 25(8): 48-53

Describes experiments in Canada in which 180 Douglas Fir glulam blocks, 5 X 5 X 24 in, half composed of clear and half of commercial material, were tested in tension perpendicular at six different rates of loading. The reduction in strength with time was greater than that predicted by the Madison 'duration of load' concept (which predicts a 38% reduction of strength over a 10-year period).
