A two-dimensional stochastic process was used to derive exact expressions for the expected time to fixation or loss and the ultimate probability of loss of an allele in a haploid population whose size is a Poisson random variable. The treatment was restricted to a population in which random drift is the only pressure causing change in gene frequency. Simulation experiments for both selection and no selection were carried out to test some of the theoretical results.
