Effect of cold adaptation and high-fat diet on cold resistance and metabolic responses to acute cold exposure in rats

Male Wistar rats weighing 150 to 160 g were housed at 25 deg or 5 deg C and fed on biscuits (Oriental MF) or at 25 deg and on a diet with fat to provide 50.1% of total energy (high-fat diet). After 4 to 5 weeks the rats at 5 deg were transferred to 25 deg for 24 h before all the rats had their hair clipped and were exposed for 80 min or 4 h at 0 deg. Colonic temperature was measured with a thermistor.
