Effect of creep feeding oat grain to beef calves on their growth rate, carcase composition and post-weaning performance in a feedlot

Autumn- and spring-born Hereford calves in Victoria grazed with their dams and half of them had access to oat grain in a creep enclosure from November to weaning, in February and May for the respective birth seasons. Females were then killed and males were given hay and concentrate in yards to 340 kg liveweight. Up to November the older and younger calves gained 1.4 and 1.5 kg daily, then those with creep feed continued to gain at the same rate but for the others daily gain fell to weaning.
