Effect of dietary fat on growth rate and responsiveness to stress in weaned piglets

A commercial starter was fed to 36 piglets from the second week after birth, and 17 of them also received fresh lard at a rate of 3 kg/97 kg starter. Adrenocortical response to insulin hypoglycaemia was assessed in 15 piglets from each group in the second week after weaning. Average daily wt gain during 14 days was 0.376 kg in lard-fed piglets v. 0.361 kg in controls. The lard-fed piglets also showed higher blood glucose values and higher eosinophile counts in peripheral blood.
