In a trial in 1971-3 at Liebenwalde on valley sand soil with the groundwater table maintained at about 60, 80 or 100 cm below the surface by furrow irrigation, (a) Italian ryegrass, (b) Westerwolds ryegrass, (c) red clover/timothy/meadow fescue ley, (d) green maize and (e) silage maize were given 0-480 kg N/ha in split applications.
