Effect of gamma radiation and packing on the postharvest life of guava (Psidium guajava L.)

Gamma irradiation (30 krad), wax paper box liners and polyethylene liners increased the postharvest life of guavas by 5, 6 and 7 days, respectively, over controls. The organoleptic quality of fruit after 10 days storage was best in fruit kept in polyethylene. The 2 packing materials reduced weight loss during storage. Irradiation increased the soluble/insoluble pectin ratio but the effect was reversed during later storage.
