Effect of long-term phosphorus fertilization on the plant yields and phosphorus dynamics in the soil

In trials in Poland in 1962-71 with annual application of 0, 36, 72 or 144 kg P2O5/ha, initial soil P content had no significant effect on average yield of cereals, root crops and legumes. The response to P fertilizer was, however, slightly dependent on initial soil P content. On soils with low initial P (1-5 mg P2O5/100 g soil) the average yield increase in a Norfolk-type rotation with 36 kg P2O5/ha was 8-9%/year in cereal units compared with 4%/year on soils with high initial P levels.
