In trials with rice given PK, 100 kg N/ha was applied in a single dressing at transplanting or as a top-dressing at different growth stages or in 4 equal split top-dressings. N applied broadcast at puddling, placed 5 cm deep or as a top-dressing at the early tillering stage or at the panicle initiation stage had similar effects on paddy yields. Top-dressing of the full N rate at the flag leaf or earing stage had a small effect on yield, but significantly increased the grain N content.
