Effect of method of nitrogen application on corn (Zea mays L.) grown on irrigated sandy soils

In plot trials, maize was grown at 2 sites on sandy soils and was untreated or was given a total of 252 or 224 kg N/ha in 1970 and '72, respectively, at pre-sowing, as a side-dressing, in the irrigation water or with a combination of any 2 of these techniques. In 1970, 252 kg N/ha gave a 3-fold increase in grain and a 2-fold increase in forage yields compared to the untreated control.
