Effect of sowing date and rates of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers on grain yield and some characteristics of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench)

In 2 trials with grain sorghum at Vicosa in 1972-3, one in the wet season and the other in the dry season, 3 sowing dates at 20-day intervals and 3 rates of N (0, 50 or 100 kg N/ha) were tested. Sowing in the wet season (Oct.-Nov.) gave grain yields 2.4 times higher than did sowing in the dry season (Feb.-March). Fertilizer P increased grain yields significantly in both trials. Fertilizer N also increased yields but to a lesser extent in the dry season.
