In 3 field trials in 1971-4 using spring wheat Mexifen, applications of N were found to increase yield, mainly due to an increase in the number of ears/m2. N also increased plant height and flag leaf area. An attack of aphids reduced grain weight, and to a lesser extent grain number/ear, plant height and flag leaf area. Heavier applications of N led to higher aphid populations, especially before ear emergence.
