Effect of underfeeding in the early postnatal period on amylolytic and invertase activity of the intestinal mucosa in growing rats

Total ( alpha - and gamma -) amylolytic and invertase activity was estimated in segments of the small intestine of growing rats underfed during the first half of the suckling period. The mothers were allowed to suckle 16 young throughout or 8 young for only 8 h daily during the first 8 days; control rats were suckled, 8/mother, until weaning. The young from each group were killed when 8, 14, 21, 28, 56, 75 or 90 days old for estimation of enzyme activity in homogenates of the small intestine.
