Effect of uremia on rates of ethanol disappearance from the blood and on the activities of the ethanol-oxidizing enzymes

Uraemia was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by removal of about 85% of the renal mass. Controls had a sham operation. The mean activity of alcohol dehydrogenase was increased significantly in the uraemic rats to 2.12 plus or minus 0.13 mu mol/mg protein h, compared with a control value of 1.39 plus or minus 0.13 mu mol/mg protein h.
