Effect of variety and growing conditions on virus propagation

The factors which have a direct effect on the degree of infection suffered by potato plants, apart from the intensity of attack by vectors, are classified into four groups under the headings (a) plant vulnerability (based on the degree to which the plant is attractive to insects and to which it tolerates their rapid multiplication), (b) infectivity (vector and plant as sources of infection), (c) plant susceptibility (based on the capacity of the plant to accept the virus and to tolerate its multiplication together with the speed of its transference from foliage to tubers) and (d) plant sensitivity (based on the date of appearance and intensity of symptoms). Differences between varieties are apparent in each of these categories.
