Effect of various dietary mineral concentrations on the occurrence of feline urolithiasis

Magnesium phosphate calculi developed in the urethra and bladders in cats fed diets containing 0.75 to 1.0% (high) magnesium, with either 1.6% (high) or 0.57% (low) phosphate. When diets containing 1.6% phosphate and 0.08% (low) magnesium were fed, calcium phosphate deposits developed in the renal tubules. High dietary calcium (2.0%) decreased calculi formation when either magnesium or phosphate concentrations were high but not when both were high. High dietary calcium decreased serum magnesium concentration but did not affect magnesium absorption and urinary magnesium concentration. However, magnesium absorption was decreased by high dietary phosphate. Phosphate absorption was decreased by increasing dietary calcium and magnesium, whereas calcium absorption apparently was not affected by changing the dietary concentration of either of these materials.
