Effect of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza on sulfate uptake by onion plants

Mycorrhizal onion plants grown in soil chambers showed significantly greater uptake of 35S in a 5-day period than non-mycorrhizal plants under similar conditions. More volatile 35S was collected from mycorrhizal plants on a dry-weight basis than from non-mycorrhizal controls. Severing of external hyphae did not significantly reduce 35S uptake.
