Effect of vitamin C supplementation on black mineworkers

Effect of vitamin C supplementation on black mineworkers

South African Medical Journal 50(7): 198

This letter to the Editor comments on the occurrence of subclinical vitamin C deficiency among black mineworkers, as measured by the state of their mouths, and uses this index when comparing them with a group of sugar-cane field workers. Results confirm that subclinical vitamin C deficiency is common among black mineworkers. Supplementation of the diet with vitamin C tablets supplying 200 mg/day is recommended. Sugar workers are thought to get about 100 mg/day from chewing cane.
