Effect of vitamin E deficiency on membrane hydrolysis and carbohydrate transport in the small intestine of chickens

Canadian White Leghorn chicks were reared to 25 days of age on semisynthetic diets based on casein, starch, glucose and sunflower oil without vitamin E or with DL- alpha -tocopheryl acetate 50 mg/kg feed. Everted sacs of upper jejunum were filled with Ringer solution and incubated in 1% starch, maltose or glucose solutions for 30 min. Hydrolysis was assessed from the amounts of glucose recovered in mucosal and serosal media and estimated by a glucose oxidase method.
