In a 3-year field trial with lucerne Mesa-Sirsa irrigated to field capacity when (a) 50% of available soil moisture had been utilized to a depth of 1.2 m or (b) 100% of available soil moisture had been utilized to the same depth, DM production, plant height at harvest, water-use efficiency and total water utilization/growth period decreased during summer months while water utilization increased.
