Effect of water saturation deficit on the volume of intercellular spaces in leaves

Effect of water saturation deficit on the volume of intercellular spaces in leaves

Acta Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae 43(4): 465-470

The volume of intercellular spaces (IS) at levels of water deficit (WD) ranging from 0 to 40% was measured in leaves of Vicia faba, Nicotiana rustica, potato Flisak, Brassica napus var. oleifera and sugar beet. Results indicated that the IS volume depended on the extent of leaf hydration and decreased linearly with increase in WD. In the species studied, the extent of changes in IS of the lower and apical leaves at the same WD differed and depended on the IS at a WD of 0%.
