Effect of zinc deficiency on collagen cross-linking

For 6 weeks 2 groups of rats initially 21 days old were pair-fed on diets which contained Zn 2 or 90 mg/kg. When the rats were killed, pooled samples of skins were minced and the neutral salt-soluble collagen was extracted. For those deprived of Zn, reversibility of neutral salt-soluble collagen gel was 66.8% and for controls 45.3%; the deprived rats had increased susceptibility of insoluble collagen to denaturing agents and pronase.
