Effect of zinc status of rats on the synthesis and degradation of copper-induced thioneins

Trace element metabolism in man and animals 3: 52-56

Zn deficiency increased the Cu:Zn ratio in Cu-induced rat liver thioneins and caused a more rapid decrease in Cu and Zn from this fraction and a faster hionein degradation rate in vivo. The rate of loss of Cu + Zn during its most rapid phase paralleled 35S disappearance, suggesting that the metal composition of thioneins affects their degradation rate in vivo and determines the rate of utilization of metals from this pool.
