Effect on low oxygen concentration on respiration intensity in germinating seeds and plants of winter cereals

Flooding markedly decreased respiration intensity in plants of winter wheat and winter rye at all growth stages during autumn-winter. Submergence of germinating seeds in water sharply decreased O2 utilization and CO2 evolution. The respiratory gas exchange remained at a lower level for a certain time even after the restoration of aeration.
