In trials in 1971-3 on dark-grey forest soil in Orel region, central Russia, with oats grown after peas or Phaseolus vulgaris given 135 kg P2O5 + 57 kg K2O/ha alone or with 70-286 kg N/ha, the residual N increased straw yields of oats in all years, decreased 1000-grain weight and grain percentage in the biological yield; low N rates increased grain yields in 1972 (dry year) and all N rates decreased them in other years, compared with application of PK alone to the preceding crops.
